Using a dresser as a changing table: the size, height and pad that work

Short answer: most changing pads are 32" × 16", so the dresser top needs to be at least 32" wide and about 18" deep (a 36–48" wide top leaves room for a diaper caddy). For your back, aim for a top around 36–43" high, the range most changing tables use. Anchor the dresser to the wall and screw the pad to the dresser.

Height: find yours in 10 seconds

Stand up straight and bend your elbows to 90°. A comfortable changing surface is a few inches below your elbows, so you can keep a hand on your baby without hunching. If two of you will change diapers, pick the height for the taller person and use a stable step stool for the other rather than bending for months.

Safety checklist

Anchor the dresser to the wall. Tip-overs are one of the most serious nursery hazards. Dressers made after September 1, 2023 must meet the CPSC STURDY tip-over rule (16 CFR part 1261), and makers like IKEA still say to anchor them. Use the included kit with screws that suit your wall.

Common questions

What size changing pad fits on a dresser?

Most contoured changing pads are 32" × 16" with 3–4" sides, so the dresser top should be at least 32" wide and about 18" deep. Some changer dressers, like the Babyletto Hudson 3-drawer, use a 31" × 16" pad in a tray.

What height should a dresser be for a changing table?

Most changing tables are 36–43" high. A dresser top in that range, such as the IKEA HEMNES 3-drawer at 37¾", works well for most adults. Tall parents may prefer the top end of the range.

Is the IKEA MALM 6-drawer too low for changing?

At about 30¾" high, it's lower than most changing tables, so many adults will bend. A changing topper that raises the pad can help; choose one made for the dresser's depth.

Do I need to attach the changing pad to the dresser?

Yes. Use the pad's anchoring hardware so it can't slide, and anchor the dresser itself to the wall. Always keep a hand on your baby.

How do I attach a changing pad to a dresser?

Put the pad on the dresser top with its back edge on the wall side, then use the hardware that came with it: most contoured pads have a strap or loop that screws into the back of the dresser. Use screws short enough that they won't poke through, check that the pad can't slide or lift, and anchor the dresser to the wall too. Changing toppers that clamp or screw on should be attached the way the maker says.

How much space do I need in front of a changing dresser?

About 36" of clear floor lets you stand comfortably and open a drawer while changing.
