Crib in a closet: will it fit, and is it a good idea?
Short answer: a standard reach-in closet is about 24" deep, and every crib is deeper than that, so a crib in a closet always sticks out a little. A mini crib (about 26" ร 40" outside) fits lengthwise in a closet at least about 44" wide and pokes out roughly 3". A full-size crib (about 30" ร 54" outside) needs a closet opening of at least about 58" and pokes out roughly 6โ7". Take the closet doors off, take out the rod and shelf above the crib, and make sure air and sound reach the crib.
The numbers you need
Reach-in closet depth: usually 24", sometimes 22โ30". Measure from the back wall to the front edge of the door frame, at mattress height.
Closet opening width: what matters is the clear width between the door trim, not the wall inside. Bifold and sliding-door closets often have trim that narrows the opening by a few inches.
Full-size crib: the mattress area is set by federal standards at about 28" ร 52"; the outside of most cribs is 29โ31" ร 53โ57". Convertible cribs are often the long end of that.
Mini crib: the mattress is usually about 24" ร 38"; the outside is commonly 25โ27" ร 39โ42".
Hands room: leave 2โ4" at each end so you can tuck in sheets and the crib isn't wedged against trim.
So for a full-size crib: 54" crib + about 2" at each end = 58" opening. For a mini crib: 40" + 2" + 2" = 44". Most 6-foot (72") reach-in closets take either one. A 48" closet takes only a mini crib.
Mini crib in a reach-in closet
A 40" ร 26" mini crib along the back wall of a 72" ร 24" closet. It sticks out about 3" past the door frame, and the 30" in front stays clear. Scale: 1 ft = 48 px.
This is the most common closet nook. The mini crib is almost fully inside, which leaves the rest of the bedroom open. Centered, it leaves about 16" at each end. Or push it to one end and use the 30" left over for a narrow shelf unit or hamper, kept well out of the baby's reach.
A 54" ร 30" full-size crib in the same 72" closet. It sticks out about 7" past the door frame. Scale: 1 ft = 48 px.
A full-size crib fits a 6-foot closet lengthwise, but with only about 9" spare at each end. The front rail sits about 7" into the room, so it reads as a nook rather than fully hidden. That's fine. Just keep a 30" walkway in front so you can lift the baby out without bumping anything.
Good for: a baby who'll be in a crib for 2+ years, or a convertible crib you want to keep. Check the length first: a 57" convertible needs about a 61" opening.
Type in your room's size, draw the closet, and drag in the exact crib you're considering to see how far it sticks out.
Doors off. Remove the closet doors (or keep them fully open and fixed) so air moves and you can see and hear the baby. Never close a baby in a closet.
Nothing overhead. Take out the hanging rod and any shelf above the crib, and don't hang bins, art or organizers over it.
Airflow and temperature. Closets often have no vent and can run warmer or cooler than the room. Check the temperature inside the nook with a thermometer.
Cords and outlets. Keep the monitor cord, lamp cords and any closet lighting wires at least 3 feet from the crib.
Safe sleep basics. The AAP's guidance is a firm, flat mattress and fitted sheet with nothing else in the crib, and room-sharing (not bed-sharing) for at least the first 6 months.
What changes the answer
If your closetโฆ
Try this
Is under 44" wide
A crib won't fit lengthwise. Use the closet for a dresser or changing station instead, and put the crib on a wall. See using a dresser as a changing table.
Is a walk-in
Measure the clear floor. A walk-in closet is usually small and enclosed, so it has the same airflow and visibility issues. It works best as storage plus a changing spot.
Has a sloped ceiling or low shelf
You need standing room at the crib rail to lift the baby out. Check the height at the front of the crib, not just the back.
Has a vent or radiator inside
Keep the crib off it. Use that end for a shelf instead.
Bifold doors you want to keep
Folded bifolds stick out about 12โ18" and can cover part of the crib. Taking them off is simpler.
Before you buy
Measure the closet's clear opening width and depth at about 30" off the floor. Our measuring guide has a checklist.
Write down the outside length and width of the exact crib from the listing.
Add about 4" to the crib's length. If that's more than the opening, it won't fit.
Subtract the closet depth from the crib's width to see how far it sticks out, then check you still have 30" to walk in front.
Yes, many families make a closet nook. A mini crib fits lengthwise in a closet at least about 44" wide, and a full-size crib needs about 58". Remove the doors and anything above the crib, and check the airflow and temperature.
How deep is a closet for a crib?
Standard reach-in closets are about 24" deep. A full-size crib is about 30" wide outside and a mini crib about 26", so the crib sticks out roughly 6โ7" or 2โ3" past the door frame.
Will a full-size crib fit in a 6 foot closet?
Usually yes. A 72" opening fits a 54" crib with about 9" spare at each end. A 57" convertible crib still fits, with less spare room.
Is a closet nursery safe?
It can be if the doors are off so air and sound reach the crib, nothing hangs above it, cords stay at least 3 feet away and the temperature in the nook is comfortable. Follow the AAP's safe-sleep basics: a firm, flat mattress with nothing else in the crib.
